The sargassum heap is a drifting mass of animate seaweed and tangled flotsam, a slow ocean predator that engulfs and drowns whatever blunders into its rotting embrace. It hides in plain sight among the weed-choked shallows and derelict wrecks, indistinguishable from harmless drift until it closes around an ankle, an oar, or a hull. When the mat of weed alongside the boat suddenly heaves upward, it was never harmless drift at all. On the table it's a grappling aquatic hazard for any Over the Waves encounter, a living trap for the unwary sailor - lurk it in the same dead water as the drowned souls of the Deep Ones rising below.
